UPDATE 4.21.2011 11:06 AM: PSN Down Again, Sony references possible attacks. Also: Since the PlayStation network is down, here's a list of what you can still do with your PlayStation 3.

The PlayStation Network is down for unplanned maintenance while various Sony websites, like the PlayStation Blog, have been down for most of the day. Several hours before the PSN and Sony websites reported loading issues the hacker collective Anonymous issued a statement to Sony in regards to their actions against hackers, specifically GeoHot. Anon has not taken credit for an attack and Sony has yet to confirm there has been an attack at all.

Many are wondering if these outages are related to the statement from Anonymous. An official PlayStation twitter account acknowledged there were problems with the PSN, "PSN currently undergoing sporadic maintenance. Access to the PSN may be interrupted throughout the day. We apologize for any inconvenience." Reports of problems connecting to the PSN began after the statement was posted and as of now it seems to be functioning again.

Anonymous called out Sony specifically for their treatment of the hacker GeoHot who Sony has been involved with in a civil case. They site issues with Sony's access to personal information from those who viewed the video of the hack or who visited GeoHot's website.

If you were having issues connecting to PlayStation Network or any of Sony’s websites, here’s the reason. Hacktivist group Anonymous, or a group claiming to them, went through with their earlier promise of exacting revenge on Sony for their treatment of the jailbreak scenario, and their “fellow hackers” GeoHot and Graf_Chokolo.

Sony websites were down for a while, as was PSN, but Sony said PSN was down due to undergoing “sporadic maintenance”. It’s funny, because Sony has nearly always informed users about upcoming outages and when they would occur, but strangely did not this time round. Hmm I really can’t, for the life of me, figure out why.

Anyway, posted below is the original warning sent out by the hacker group, which can only be called revolutionary pretense. Either way, let’s see how this plays out.

Hopefully it's up and running ASAP.

I wish they wouldn't have done this... Apparently Sony can tell if you go to Geo Hot's site now. So don't go there any1 looking 2 hack their PS3. Unless u wanna end up in prison like Geo Hot.

You were right it was an attack by Geohot's fellows. But luckily SONY knew this was coming so they had shut of they PSN and other services. They are just removing the "virus" I guess you can call it and re booting PSN should be up by Tuesday.

I don't remember ever having the Xbox Live service down for more than an hour. Actually, the XBL servers have never been fully down. We can always play online, just some features will be temporarily off. Must suck for you guys. I'd have died from boredom by now.

I hope they fucking keep it down forever.

Anonymous has revealed that their next attack against Sony will be carried out when the PlayStation Network is back online.

When we asked Anonymous member Kato – who will be involved in the next attack against Sony – via their IRC about the group’s future plans regarding attacks on Sony, Kato told VGN365 that they are currently preparing their next attack against Sony; it’ll be scheduled to happen when the PlayStation Network is back online – the attack will NOT be against the PSN, just to clarify.

Anonymous will not do anything to disrupt the PlayStation Network.

The contents of the attack has yet to be revealed but be sure to stick with VGN365 for any updates regarding what the attack will actually do to Sony.

For Customer Safety I think the downtime is well worth it! I feel Better knowing there trying to patch the security whole rather then keeping the network open or if I may "Sporadically" changing from Maintenance work that could cause future loop wholes

Well I say go anon! Hack the shit out of Sony. But I dislike that PSN is down. But they have confirmed that they didn't cause this outage. So don't blame them guys!
