Hospitals get so much because of insurance. If there wasn't insurance, god forbid they actually have to charge reasonable prices. They charge insurance ridiculous amounts, then their insurance charges them ridiculous amounts. In turn, the biomedtech companies who see this profit ratchet up the cost of their products to ridiculous amounts as well, forcing hospitals to charge more to make that enormous profit and buy more machines, thus perpetuating the cycle. It's a positive feedback loop, so it won't stop till something snaps. Probably the ordinary people, seeing as 1/6 of the country is on medicare.
Laissez-faire is what encourages corporate bastardry like this. Sometimes the government has to draw the line.
