What are reputations and what are they for?

I usually check my User CP every time i log in, and sometimes it will say "Latest Reputation Received" and few posts that i posted previously. I've been wondering about this forever now, so what is reputation?

theyre not really used for anything jus basically ur rep....

Thanks and rep is different. Rep is like fame in maple and thanks is like saying like on facebook.
