ok so i looked and i couldn't find email notification for things like mentions, vm's and what not. is there a way to change this?

unfortunately you cannot.
i can for thread subscriptions and private messages. but not for visitor messages or mentions.
proof for vm's:
as for proof for mentions there are no options for them in the options panel full stop.
