Let's just say if it's really hot the you better stop using it for a few hours. Just like a gaming console.
Yeah it not normal i think you should dump some cold water onn the battery thats the only way it would work.

get a cooler 
You can get like a raised oven rack (assuming you won't get shocked) and put your laptop on it so the bottom doesn't get too hot. Anything similar but made of plastic (that won't melt to your laptop) would be better
excluding the use of an external fan (be it made for laptops, or just a room fan) the higher raised the rack is, the better.
