I would buy a cooling pad.
They're usually near $20.
They have small USB powered fans that cool your laptop.
You just place your laptop on top and put the cooling pad on your lap.
Plug it into your laptop and use.
My laptop handled Maplestory, Google Chrome, and Minecraft for 8 Hours with a shitty 2 fan $20 pad.

My laptop is 4 years old too (family laptop).

Anyway, you should also get something comfortable to put under the cooling pad (because you get a cheap pad it will be plastic and uncomfortable) such as a thin bath towel folded up (layers add a nice padding).

I wanted to point this out because after extended periods of use, my leg had a mark on it (due to idiotic design engraved on the pad -.-)

I invested in a chillmat... they're not expensive... and they keep it cool, but I never take mine off my desk, hardly...

Is it in your lap the whole time?
When a laptop is on your lap it heats up well because the heat can't ventilate.
Then it heats your pants and skin and it just get really hot.
