The reason for the "12-hour" maintenance.

The reason for this is because the reward/rewards will be in our inbox when we login or they have to back-up all the accounts, also if they got hacked they would have to fix the memory leaks.

These are just some ideas

I suppose. But I'd rather not have an award and have the server up faster than wait til two in the morning and have one.

They were probably DDOS'ed. When I visited the website, it had a typical overload message.

I agree with this. That could be the reason.

I can go on Nexon's site, but not their sites for the games like Combat Arms...

Does that mean someone tried to hack/crack into their system? because that didn't make sense to me

No, DDOS's is flooding the servers with useless data and causing it to crash.

It most certainly looked like a typical DDOS. I've seen more than my fair share of those, and that's sure as hell what it looks like.

Err... I'm not exactly sure what a distributed denial of service actually means?

It's really easy to do that, you just need a botnet to do so.

Distributed (Spread out across a large number of computers) Denial of Service (Denies service to a specific computer or website, service being an internet connection)

Put that together, and it's someone with a large number of computers spamming one guy, and overloading his internet until it crashes.
