Well, if you're going for gaming, I'd say AMD PHENOM II X4 975 3.6 GHZ.
AMD FX 8120 8-CORE 3.1 GHZ
AMD PHENON II X4 975 3.6 GHZ
Alright guys, I need your help to pick a processor which will be used to run 1 Game and 1 Simulator
Simulator: Microsoft Simulator X (which needs lots of processor resources in order to run smooth and with no lag)
Game: Battlefield 3 (which needs a very good graphic card. Im getting the XFX ATI Radeon HD6790.)
The processors are:
AMD FX 8120 8-CORE 3.1 GHZ
OR
AMD PHENOM II X4 975 3.6 GHZ
It doesnt matter which one I will buy, I will overclock it.
I dont care about the money between this 2 options, the difference are 40 bucks which I dont care, I want the best option.
I wont get Intel since I already bought a AM3+ mobo due to my limited budget.
AMD FX is a new processor, cant find too much info or reviews about it and I cant decide which one to buy.
A lot of ppl say AMD Phenom is better for Gaming and tbh I dont know which one to buy.
Im not planning to change the graphic card but if you can suggest me one with a similar price, will be appreciated.
Please if you are not an expert, limit yourself on answering. I want smart answers/suggestions.
Thanks.

I would forward the Phenom too, it has far more potential imo. At least as far as I've had the 955 and 965, both were easily OCed and the people that ended up getting the PCs never complained. You might, however, want to upgrade that gfx card. An overclocked 965 + HD6950 has trouble playing BF3 at 1920*1200 on all high settings from what I heard.

Well by "decent" I mean med/high settings on a normal res, if you dont mind lower resolutions and lower settinga ... go for it. Just check some benchmarks.

Besides the 6950 I have the 6970 with the 965 and it doesn't give me any problems at 1920x1080 on bf3 with settings on high, I get a bit on ultra. But of course with it being a BE processor its over clocked to 4.5 and it seems to keep up with everything I need it to do. So my opinion to you would be to get the 975.

Isn't it the more core, the better?
No, not necessarily. When considering CPUs many things have to be taken into account, and it's not as simple as saying: more cores = better, higher frequency = better. A new get quad core Intel i5 could beat an eight core FX with higher speeds And @SmartAlley if you still want this thread open, tell me. I'll close it since it's old and I suppose you've gotten reasonable feedback (3:1).
