Have you got the right Java bit-version?
Up to date with Java?
Tried restarting computer/internet connection?

Tried deleting your /bin folder and launching up the client again?

EDIT: What are you using to connect to the internet? Cable/a wireless adapter?
> Also try disabling your anti-virus software(s) and post results.

If the connection fails, and HTML code is displayed in the news panel, or the news panel has a black background, it may indicate that Java 7 is having trouble using the IPv6 format to communicate with minecraft.net. If this is the case, you'll need to tell Java 7 to prefer to use IPv4 instead of IPv6. Right-click on minecraft.exe and select "Create shortcut". Rename the shortcut to something else, such as "Minecraft with IPv4". Right-click on the shortcut and select properties. In the Target field, replace the text with:
java -Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true -Djava.net.preferIPv6Addresses=false -jar minecraft.exe
If the shortcut cannot find the location of java, try the following location:
"%ProgramFiles%\Java\jre7\bin\java" -Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true -Djava.net.preferIPv6Addresses=false -jar minecraft.exe

this is from minecraft help but i have no idea what they mean with Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true -Djava.net.preferIPv6Addresses=false -jar minecraft.exe
