Company of Heroes Online Game Tips.
These are pretty simple, but will come handy for a beginner. Also, this topic will contain some guides that I will create later on, for now I will just have tips in this post.
Tips for both sides.
- This is obvious, but remember - use cover to your advantage. The better the cover, the less damage your soldiers take, but this isnt the case versus engineers/pioneers with flamethrowers. If you see a massive blob (several units of same type together) of flamethrower pios/engies, then always remember - GET OUT OF COVER! If you have a swamp nearby, then get in it ASAP, because flamethrowers do less damage againist units in water. If you're wondering why you should get out of cover, then answer is simple - flamethrowers do +25% damage to units in yellow cover and +50% damage to units in buildings and green cover.
- Don't build observation posts on strategic points unless they are really strategic (example - the strategic points connects your base to most/all of your supply points). Putting OP on SP costs 200 manpower and the manpower income rate is incerased by 1, so that means it takes more than hour for the OP investion to be worth it.
- Don't forget to tech up (for Americans - build supply depot, for Wehremacht - escalate to next phase in the HQ), it's very important because a player that has only tier/tech 1 building (for Axis - Wehremacht Quarters, for Allies - Weapon Support Center or Barracks) is not going to do well againist a player that already teched up to the best buildings that bring out the faction's most powerful tanks (Panzer Command, highest tier/tech building for Axis can also bring out Knight's Cross Holders, which are deadly 3-man squads armed with MP44's).
Tips for American faction players.
- Always make sure you apply pressure to the enemy, that means you should always try to cut enemy supply lines, capture fuel & munition points and do frequent skirmishes againist the enemy defences (Axis tend to dig-in early game).
- Use your early game infantry superiority advantage to maximum (Riflemen are superior to Volksgrenadiers in close and mid range, but Volksgrenadiers will mostly rip apart Riflemen squads at long ranged skirmishes).
- Always remember that an assault jeep (hero unit) is a deadly weapon when it gets to level 5 as it gets massive damage, health boost and gets ability to capture enemy points.
- Don't bother wasting resources on building bunkers and such early game, you should instead spend that fuel to tech up (build supply depot, then motor pool, then get early M8).
- M8 Greyhound Armored Car is a very effective anti-infantry American armored car that can be deployed from Motor Pool for 280 manpower (unsure about manpower) and 30 fuel.
- Don't send M8 into battle until you have got the both upgrades - armored skirts & the machine gun.
- Risking with your early M8 is a bad idea, so before you attack fortified positions (example - Victory Point) you should always send a scout (jeep) to check every single corner of the defences to make sure there's no cloaked Pak AT gun waiting to blow the hell out of your M8.
- If the enemy has MG team/MG emplacement ahead, then remember that flanking is the way to win, but don't put your jeep too close to the MG team or the 2 other crew members that don't shoot the gun will shoot at you with powerful close-ranged weapons. Distracting the MG team is also good idea, even if it wont work (MG weapon would for example setup in another direction) it's still good because actually it will work - you will have the unit that tried to distract back up again.
- Always remember that your rangers & paratroopers if upgraded correctly have a fire-up ability, it removes any supression your units have for the small cost of 5 munitions, it also incerases the speed and makes the units avoid suppression for short amount of time, but it also makes your fired-up troops easier to kill.
- Shermans are not as effective as you may think, so always remember - mass-produce them if you want effiency, that's how they were effective in World War 2.. they were mass produced and outnumbered the Wehremacht monstrous tanks.
- If you see a King Tiger on the field, then seriously - don't worry, just take a riflemen squad and throw a sticky bomb at the KT. It will most likely get damaged engine after it explodes and then you will have a massively armored turtle on the field that will be vunerable to AT guns & artillery.
- Your M10 tank destroyers are not invunerable, actually they have very weak armor, so always remember - have infantry and heavier tank support for the M10. It does extremly good damage and has moving turret, but the armor is weak.
Tips for Wehremacht faction players.
- It's not exactly a perfect idea, but it's still useful to get an early Pak AT gun and place it in the VP you control (or if it's 1v1 or 2v2, then in the VPs you control, by control I mean the VPs you're protecting) and if you have no VPs, then place it in your base.
- If you see M8 stop and then you see some kind of bar filling up in the middle of it, then remember 1 thing - it's planting a mine, so better don't step over it, because the mine is WAY MORE POWERFUL than the standart mines, so if it gets planted at the exit for example of Krieg Barracks, then simply send pioneers with minesweeper upgrade or send an unit to suicide, otherwise first unit to come out of Krieg Barracks will get blown up before seeing action.
- Axis infantry is weak early game, but Axis have the advantage of being able to call a sniper & MG out from their Quarters, while the Allies need to build a special team building for it, so use it to your advantage.
- The MG42 supresses more than the American .30 cal, so it's not good idea to fight with .30 cal head on, because the higher supression is compensated by lowered damage.
- Remember - panzerfaust is your friend, don't hesitate to use it againist garrisoned buildings, enemy light armor (M8's, jeeps etc.) or low-health enemy heavier armor (M10, Sherman, Pershing, Calliope etc.).
- If you're Blitzkreig commander, then always remember that your Stormtroopers are deadly AT soldiers and the panzerschreck are very accurate AT guns, so sneak up behind that darn annoying Pershing and shoot the crap out of it!
- Don't fight American riflemen with your volksgrenadiers at close or mid range unless the volks have MP44 upgrade. The volksgrenadiers are good at long ranged skirmishes, if they don't have the MP44 upgrade.
- Wehremacht can buy veterancy from Kampfkraft Center while Allies have to earn it throught combat - use it to your advantage, but don't over-use it early game, because YOU NEED TO TECH UP not get your pioneers & volks to vet 3.. your vet 3 volks or pios wont really stand much of a chance againist American armor (especially Sherman, it can't be easily taken down by a panzerfaust and it's very deadly versus infantry).
- Don't rush your tanks againist American infantry if that infantry has bazookas or you suspect they have them. Also watch out for riflemen, they can throw stickybombs if they have the upgrade. Sticky bombs almost always do engine damage which slows down your armor and sometimes the stickybomb can immobilize your armor.
- Nebelwerfer is good artillery unit that excels at bombing positions where enemy infantry cluster is spread out (clusters of infantry wont work because nebelwerfer is inacurrate, but it gets accurate if you're REALLY close to the target).
- Panther is not good againist infantry, so for the sake of your spent fuel - don't risk it by rushing versus infantry.
- Puma is very good anti-infantry unit, but it lacks any good armor, so it's recommended to use Ostwinds instead, they have better armor. Ostwinds have recently been nerfed down terribly, so don't send them alone, try sending 3 Ostwinds that have MG support againist enemy blobs and you will see nice results (unless the supressed infantry blob is ranger/paratrooper blob that is armed with M9 bazookas/recoilless rifles and have fire-up upgrade).
- It's good to "dig in" early game (defend your victory points and don't let the enemy take your sectors), but that doesn't mean you should just wait out the whole game, it's always good to harass enemy points so you maybe get your Panzer IV faster and/or make the enemy have more problems teching up.
More tips will be added over time.
Tips are made by me from my experience from playing both sides in Vanilla Company of Heroes and Company of Heroes Online (mainly from CoHO).
