[Release] Halloween Update + Mega Info

Well Minecraft is a pretty kick ass game and they just released a new update to make the game even better. For all of us without the legitimate version of the game though, there is no auto updating, so I instead will give you the files needed.

How to install

1. Hit Start, then click on run.

2. Now type in %appdata%

3. After downloading the files needed from here, extract them with either Winrar or 7zip.

4. Drag the folder .minecraft into the %appdata% folder.

5. It will ask you about overwriting or merging, just hit yes*

6. After it has finished merging the folders, play the game as you normally would.

* This is going to overwrite all of your textures installed and at the moment, there seems to be no way to install old textures without messing up the ones needed in the update pretty bad. So you will have to deal with using the default textures for a while. Its ok they are not that bad. I am going to be modifying some of my texture packs to work with this update and will be posting them here at some point.

INFO TIEM

The Halloween update was released on the 31st of October as a cumulative update for both stability and gameplay. The updates inslude:
1. A new world called "The Nether"
2. 2 new monster (mob) types: Ghast and Zombie Pigmen
3. Scarier depths
4. Fishing rods are now usable
5. 6 New block types
6. Pumpkins and Jakolantern helmets.
7. A watch
8. Biomes
(Timed torches and the additions of lanterns were unfortunately not in this update as originally planned. They may be in later updates)

1. The Nether

Hell for minecraft. The nether is home to fast traveling, strange happening, a lot of panic, and home to the most annoying fucking monster in the game.

Fast traveling in hell is the principle that for every one block travel in The Nether, you move 16 blocks in the real world. So if you travel 10 block in The Nether, and re-enter normal world, (via a new portal ofc) you will be 160 blocks away from the original portal.

Compasses nor watches will work in the nether, and will just spin sporadically.

New block types are found inside the never as well. See the block type section for more info though. Mushrooms also seem to be more common than in the real world.

Water can not be place in this world without the use of INVedit. Buckets will merely evaporate when placed, and make a hissing noise.

Portals

Portals are your gateway to hell. Or the Nether. Whichever

Building a portal will require at least 10 blocks of Obsidian, and a Means to create fire. (flint)



The portal only needs to be one block deep, so long as there is a 2X3 box encased in Obsidian with fire in it.

Lighting a fire on just one side of it will trigger the portal.

Portals need to be stood in for a few seconds to work. Upon first entering The Nether, it will create a new portal and that will be your new Nether spawn point, as all portals built in the real world, will lead right to the first one in The Nether.

To get out of the nether you will either need to build a new portal, or exit through your original one. Exiting through a new portal will put you back in the real world 16X the amount of distance you traveled in The Nether. (Away from your spawn point) It is possible for you to wind up in some weird situations using portals so be careful.

2. Monsters

Ghast

The newest and most annoying Mob now in the game (yes more than the creeper)

The Ghasts will spawn in The Nether so long as they have a 5x5x5 box to do so.

They usually spawn in groups and will relentlessly pelt you with fireballs until you are dead, but you can however knock these fireballs back with your fists or any other item, and use their own weapon against them.

Lava will hurt them, but fire will not.

It has also been rumored that the Ghast can spawn in the real world, buy on of The Nether gates (portals)

Ghasts will drop some gunpowder when killed.

Zombie Pigmen

A passive Mob that will only attack when provoked. It is a good idea not to attack them though as they usually hang around in large groups and will easily overwhelm you if you piss them off.

They will drop some Grilled Pork, Or Feathers upon being killed.

3. Scarier Depths

Darker areas are now far more dangerous, so It is a very very good idea to keep some torches with you at all times.

4. Fishing Rods

Fishing is now valid in the game, and can be created by right clicking on a fairly open body of water with your fishing rod in hand.

The key is to wait patiently until you see the bobber dip down and back up. Reel the line in and if you did it right, a fish will fly out of the water to a place near your current position.

Plain fish heals 1 full heart.

Cooked fish heals 2.5 hearts of health.

Grilling fish is done in the exact same manner as pork. Fish wont stack either.

5. New Block Types

Lightstone

It is only found in the Nether and servers no purpose as of now besides the possibility of underwater lighting, as it is always glowing even under water.

It needs no tools to mine, and will drop Lightstone dust when mined.


Stacking Lightstone in a 9x9 block will make a Lightstone block, but this will not work the other way for some reason.

Bloodstone

Currently useless in crafting, but it will burn indefinably, providing easier fireplace builds. Pathetic against TNT.

Mud

Non-craft able, and does nothing more than slow anything that moves on it down. Used to make traps to slow down mobs maybe, but there are better alternatives.

Pumpkin

Hard to find, and do nothing more than serve as a (useless) helmet for the player. It is unique however in that it actually blocks the players view.



Jack-O-Lanterns can be made by shoving a torch up the pumpkins ass:

Oddly, they give off more light than torches, but look exactly the same as a normal pumpkin in your inventory.

The 6th block type is nothing more than the portal effects and needs no explanation or pics.

Biomes

The world instead of being just one type, now consists of 11 Biomes. These are:
Rain Forest
Swamp
Seasonal Forest
Forest
Savanna
Woods
Taiga
Desert
Grassy Desert
Tundra
The Nether

Currently the Biomes are fairly rough and offer not very realistic climate changes, but this is being worked on.

I dont know if the pic loaded the first time or not but I know its there now.

Just make a square with obsidian that has a 2x3 hole in it. Then place some fire in the hole.

It has to be an upright thing btw.

A little update:

Ghats are VERY big. If anyone has ever found a large slime then they are about that big. They are not particularly a nuisance until you get a couple on both sides of you. They can take damage from things like swords or tools, but its hard to get at them in The Nether, so bouncing their fireballs is the best way.

Pigmen remember you after you die. So try not to make your visits too frequent if you happened to agitate a Pigmen. Because they move very fast and deal ludicrously large amounts of damage. It only took one to kill me through my diamond armor, while running away from it. I managed to piss a large group off and they chased me to my gate before killing me so my Nether is almost inaccessible atm. :X

Never take anything valuable into The Nether because unless you are on peaceful chances are you will lose it. Ive lost 2 full suites of diamond armor+a golden helmet+2Diamond pick axes+a compass while just trying to explore. (Well punching a pigman might have had something to do with it but meh)
