Schizophrenia is a chronic, severe, and disabling brain disease.
Schizophrenia is found all over the world. The severity of the symptoms and the long-lasting, chronic pattern of schizophrenia often results in disability, and many individuals need ongoing assistance to manage the most basic functions of independent living. People with schizophrenia may have perceptions of reality that are strikingly different from the reality seen and shared by others around them. Their behavior may seem odd, unusual or even bizarre at times. They sometimes hear voices, talk to themselves, or respond to imaginary fears. At times, normal individuals may feel, think, or act in ways that resemble schizophrenia. Normal people may sometimes be unable to "think straight." They may become extremely anxious, for example, when speaking in front of groups and may feel confused, be unable to pull their thoughts together, and forget what they had intended to say. This is not schizophrenia. At the same time, people with schizophrenia do not always act abnormally. Indeed, some people with the illness can appear completely normal and be perfectly responsible, even while they experience hallucinations or delusions. An individual's behavior may change over time, becoming bizarre if medication is stopped and returning closer to normal when receiving appropriate treatment.
The Dopamine / Schizophrenia Connection. The behaviour of people with schizophrenia is frequently extremely odd and appalling. In fact, they cannot tell the difference between reality and the imagined. In other words, they are experiencing psychotic episodes, which are marked by delusions (thoughts that are disconnected, strange and have no foundation in reality) hallucinations (audio, visual, and tactile) and muddled thinking, “ connections among their thoughts are extremely loose… jump from one subject to another entirely unrelated topic…they make no rational sense”. (Schizophrenia,2003, Para 1) There is a biochemical cause for this affliction; this paper researches schizophrenia’s connection to the dopamine systems, and it starts with the oxidization of the catecholamines. The catecholamines (Norepinephrine; Epinephrine; Adrenalin; Dopamine) (Davidson, 1994) enter a process of oxidation (Smythies, John, R, 1997), and as the process advances, the catecholamines transform into o-Quinones: “O-Quinones are physiological oxidation products of catecholamines that contribute to redox cycling, toxicity and apoptosis, i.e. the neuro. Why do some people bite their nails when they are stressed, while others laugh nervously or punch holes in walls? We know there is some genetic cause for one behavior to develop over another, but what exactly makes one persons mind go completely off track? Everybody lives a unique life, and it is impossible to find one single reason for nail-biting or depression or serial killing in a person. Although there are certain common characteristics in serial killers that suggest the “type” of person who is at risk for developing this behavior, not everyone with these characteristics will turn out to be a killer. The following research is on the mental disorder shcizophrenia, and how it relates to the topic of serial murderers. I picked this disorder because it is the most common in these types of criminals. Many of them became serial killers because of psychological problems they devoloped being raised in severely dysfunctional families, some had disorders that were probably genetic, some people even say that schizophrenia could devolp because of severe trauma/ injury to the brain. We cannot be sure though which of these reasons if any of them, was the main cause of their violence. People contemplating suicide feel their problems are inescapable and feel like they have totally lost control. They can’t think clearly or make decisions. They feel that they can’t stop the pain. They don’t see themselves as worthwhile, and can’t make the sadness stop. They may feel they can not gain control over their life, or see any kind of future without pain. Studies have found that there are ten main elements that appear often in cases of suicide and thus have come to be considered the common elements leading to suicide. It has been found that the common purpose of suicide attempts is to try to find a solution to a problem; the common goal is the cessation of consciousness. The common stimulus is unbearable psychological pain, and the common stressor is frustrated psychological needs. The common emotion is hopelessness, and the common cognitive state is ambivalence. The common perceptual state is constriction, or tunnel vision, and the common action is escape. Finally, the common interpersonal act is communication of intentions, and the common pattern is a consistency in life-long patterns of coping mechanisms. About 80% of people considering suicide give warning signs, although they may not be obviousSchizophrenia, manipulation and the human battle against literally mind-numbing conformity are all elements in the stage adaptation of Ken Kesey's powerful novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.Randle Patrick McMurphy (Jack Nicholson) escapes work on a prison farm by feigning mental illness, but he finds himself in a far more coercive institution than the one he left behind. A wisecracking, rebellious patient and prisoner, 38 years old, is escorted into the ward where he meets some of the bizarre, most memorable patients and inmates. The other men, both sane and insane, are just like him: they hide in the locked ward from the law, their families, or the despair of their own lives. Its allegorical theme is set in the world of an authentic mental hospital at the Oregon State Hospital in Salem, Oregon in the 1970’s. The life is dull and repetitive. The inmates are so used to its repetitiveness that they have tuned the exciting part of life out completely. Everyone on the ward seems to mutually fear Nurse Ratched, who instigates very strict policies. McMuprhy, who was diagnosed with Schizophrenia, knows right away that something is wrong and doesn’t like the way they are treated. He sees the inmates not caring that they We start with an image—a tiny, golden child on hands and knees, circling round and round a spot on the floor in mysterious, self-absorbed delight. She does not look up, though she is smiling and laughing; she does not call our attention to the mysterious object of her pleasure. She does not see us at all. She and the spot are all there is, and though she is eighteen months old, an age for touching, tasting, pointing, pushing, exploring, she is doing none of these. She does not walk, or crawl up stairs, or pull herself to her feet to reach for objects. She doesn’t want any objects. Instead, she circles her spot. Or she sits, a long chain in her hand, snaking it up and down, up and down, watching it coil and uncoil, for twenty minutes, half an hour--- until someone comes, moves her or feeds her or gives her another toy, or perhaps a book.” Excerpted from “The Siege” By Clara Claiborne Park. Beck MD, a psychotherapist, is considered one the most influential people in modern cognitive psychology and is known as the “Father of Cognitive Therapy.” Cognitive psychology is the study of people’s mental processes between a stimulus and a response. Cognitive psychologists investigate a person is capability to perceive, work out, and solve problems through insight and the use of their memory. Similar to the operations of a computer, a human is able to gain information, process and store it, and then be able to retrieve the information for future use. Beck’s interest in cognitive psychology can be traced back to when he was eight years old when he encountered a life-threatening staff infection that indefinitely altered his personality. Beck was brought up as a typical middle-class young boy, born the youngest of three sons into a Russian Jewish immigrant family on July 18, 1921 in Providence, Rhode Island. His father was a printer who took pride in his socialist ideals; while his mother was extremely overbearing an This is a speech with an informative outline. There was a huge football fan named Tom. (Myers, 1999, Psychology)I. FIRST MAIN POINT: To inform you about Schizophrenia, we must first look at the causes of this There are many psychological disorders and diseases that affect today’s families. One particular disease is schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is quite common in mental hospitals, however, until recently, the disease was a mystery to the medical society. Although it is a cruel disease, there are rays of hope, such as, research, treatment, and the organizations of families and friends. Along with being a mystery to the medical community, schizophrenia is also a mystery to society in general. Few people are familiar with the disease in detail. Researchers are now working toward making everyone aware of the disease. What exactly is schizophrenia? That’s a question few people can answer in great detail. Most would simply answer that it was a disease in which a person had “two personalities.” Schizophrenia is a brain disease that tends to run in families. Family members have a 10 percent chance of getting the disease. According to researchers, schizophrenia is a combination of more than one disease. There is no way in which schizophrenia can be reliably measured. There is, however, a proposed list of symptoms which point strongly toward schizophrenia as the diagnosis. Some of the symptoms are: auditory hallucinatio
Treatment for depression is important because: early treatment may prevent severity, thoughts of suicide may go away, those in between depression episodes may feel completely well, 1 out of 4 people with depression will still experience some symptoms during episodes which can lead to severity if not treated, and treatment can prevent persistent depression. Disturbing statistics like this help spark efforts by the medical community to find a cure and a definite cause. The deficit schizophrenia subtype describes a group of patients who have a low risk for suicide. Schizophrenia is a terrible disease which is hard on the individual as well as their family members and friends. However, the symptoms of schizophrenia may not appear until later in life. ns where one"tms thoughts are spoken aloud, auditory hallucinations in which two voices are arguing, hallucinations of touch, withdrawal of thoughts, insertion of thoughts, insertion of feelings by others, insertion of irresistible impulses, feeling that one"tms actions are controlled by others, delusions of perception, and auditory hallucinations with voices commenting on o!ne"tms actions. Since 1935, reports have shown that individuals with schizophrenia have unusual fingerprint and palmprint patterns. The schizophrenic patients who are in the paranoid subtype are associated with a high 12 risk of suicide. Many theories have been explored as to just how this is transmitted to family members. Suspiciousness which thrives in the absence of negative symptoms describes the somewhat elevated risk group. Diseases of the brain, like schizophrenia, which affect the limbic system are more likely to produce schizophreniclike symptoms. The theory that schizophrenia is transmitted by genes has not yet been proved. This disease is a very common, devastating, and tragic mental illness that most often strikes youth people right when they are maturing into adulthood. However, diagnosis can only take place when the following standards have been met: illness symptoms lasting for at least six months, deterioration in everyday function, disease began before the age of 45, symptoms don"tmt suggest mental disorders or retardation, symptoms don"tmt suggest the presence of a manic-depressive illness, delusions, or hallucinations. They may not even notice any symptoms. This is a speech with an informative outline. There was a huge football fan named Tom. He would always go to every football game that he could. Schizophrenia, an often misunderstood disease, is usually interpreted by those not familiar with it as Multiple Personality Disorder. Schizophrenia is also seen as the ideal case of insanity. The cause of this disease is still unknown, but scientists are constantly searching for answers. Although a cure for schizophrenia is surely far in the future, research and understanding is making more and more progress every day. Over the years, professionals have come up with a fairly accurate definition of Schizophrenia. When a person’s thinking, feeling, and behaving are so far from normal so as to interfere with his or her ability to function in everyday life, and delusions, hallucinations, or irregular thinking or emotions are produced, then he or she has a mental illness called schizophrenia (Smith 19). The most common symptoms of schizophrenia are hallucinations and delusions, and irregular thinking. Other signs include disorganized speech, behavior, and loss of appetite, loss of hygiene, depersonalization and social withdrawal. The thought process of a normal person is basically organized, while the thought process of a person with schizophrenia is not. The person with schizophrenia usually has delusions and hallucinations th
