What is the best method to record a video?

I tried fraps..but its files are 2 big...and tried converting it to AVI but its graphics was bad...how can I convert it into .mp4?
I tried camstudio but its graphics is shit...
and i dont know how to use windows movie maker and how can i edit a video?
