A VERY intersting program idea that doesn't exist yet.
I'd like to apologize RIGHT NOW if I'm in the wrong section, so anyways, here we go.
How about a program that patches you into the SSO server...WITHOUT launching vindi.
This would effectively say that you're online and that you could chat with friends but without running Vindictus.
Pros:
Much less intensive for your computer to run.
You don't have to put up with people in general chat.
If you don't play anymore but you still want to keep up you can run this program instead.
If you want to run Vindictus, Skype, MSN, etc etc at the same time but can't and you're only using Vindictus as a chat system, this could help.
Cons:
If people want to invite you to a party as an assist - they're SOL.
What does everybody think?
Note: I can't code, but if someone else here could, and would like to work on it, then I'd be very grateful.
I would be willing to sell my body for this program. Or someone else's.
Does this serve any purpose other than chatting? I'm just curious.
I got a solution - Skype. You can even voice chat and video chat.
I like the idea. But I don't see it being much better than having IRC/MSN/Skype/Vent/Mumble/TS/AIM/WhateverChatProgram. The best "workaround" I can think of that is possible to implement would be something along the lines of:
Launch Vindictus with low settings, Windowed
Load your own map/boat. Something not very graphics heavy (Like the Avatar shop or Background).
Set FPS Cap
You have your own Chat Client
All you need for this is a working console. You don't get the full benefit of being lightweight, but with enough toned down settings, you can get it to run pretty low resource. I've been running Vindictus on my GMA965 on my laptop. I've been forcing DX7 since before public hacks were available. DX7 on Vindictus actually gives you invisible player models, giving a nice little boost in performance.
Try -dxlevel 70 at the end of your executable. This breaks injections. But you only need to do this once and it'll stick perm.
Anyway I'm wandering off topic. But I think the easiest route is to take Vindictus and shut off as many things as possible (As opposed to reverse engineering the chat and recreating a client). Given that this is the source engine, it might not be too hard.
Well damn. If we're going to be making this let's make an iPhone and Android app as well! lol. Still would be cool. I would only use it if it was on my phone.
