The very points that define life itself are all based on Earthen organisms. We've still yet to fully grasp what "life" is and how it manifests in other regions of the universe. Extraterrestrial beings may be comprised of pure energy, and we wouldn't even be able to see it. It'd be next to impossible to formulate, let alone devise a method of determining life beyond the bounds of what we know. Our best bet is to apply the same prinicples of life on Earth to our research, even if life may, and probably does, have differential requisites.
