Help with Dreamhost VPS
Good morning y'all.

I've been working on a project with a small team for the past couple of months and made the leap to take it to the next level with VPS hosting.
After doing a little shopping around I found Dreamhost to be the most cost-effective VPS provider for the relatively minor traffic I expect to receive so I went and bought a VPS.

The one tutorial I could find in MPGH on hosing to a linux based VPS, unfortunately, doesn't exactly transfer well to Dreamhost. Like at all.
By default Dreamhost VPS owners are not allowed root or sudo access so many of the steps covered in the tutorial can't even be done. So my hope is to see if someone here has any experience with dreamhost hosting anything at all to maybe sherpa me through the steps required to set up and engage the server.

Here's what I've managed to do thus far:
1) Obtained VPS as well as a domain and unique IP addy.
2) Used filezilla to get the server files into the VPS itself.

The problem I'm running into is that I can't friggin manipulate or open any of the files from the VPS side. So no ability to run server/wserver.
I assumed, as it is when running the files locally, that from there it's a matter of running server/wserver, while making sure server.cfg was routing to my VPS's IP addy, and then either hosting a site that contains, or otherwise distributing, my client.swf.

But if I can't open wserver/server.exe from the VPS none of that will matter, right? What am I doing wrong?
I'd be happy to commemorate the person (or people) who helped me get off the ground with the VPS by memorializing them in my server.

Any help at all would be appreciated. My project, and all the time and effort of the talented team behind some of our unique stuff, are pretty much dead in the water if we can't figure this out. I've already shelled out money that I can't spare again to try a different VPS.

Of course it doesn't transfer well! Sudo is everything in terms to this! Now we need to resort to what are literally referred to as evil hacks. It's alright, though.

I'm assuming these servers are Ubuntu 16.04/16.10. You now have to resort to 'evil hacks', oh well.

Apparently, your host offers the ability to submit a ticket for admin access, depending your spefications. Clearly, they won't justify your illegal private server, but you could possibly get away with needing things such as Mono, etc for running c# applications.

What the evil hack is: Most packages are installed in the root directory, so they can be used across users, this way dependencies automatically install, the root configures, permissions are done properly, and in most cases the user can execute them across any user account. This is now all gone, packages need to be installed and stored in the home directory.

From the Dreamhost website, your vps seems to come with a preconfigured mysql, php & apache. Good. This is salvageable, we need mono, we need to connect it.

Ignore the above, this is what you need.

Getting Into It.

Ranting above aside, let's walk through what needs to happen. Your VPS plan seems to be running Ubuntu 16.10 and provides Apache, PhP & Mysql. Good. Your server should be configured with this on your home pc before transfering this over. Using the correct ipv4 and mysql details, if this isn't already done. I'm assuming you have this.

Saving the Day - Installing Mono
https:// download mono-project com/sources/mono/ <-- Hopefully I don't get in shit for that.
Version 4.2.1 should suit you well. It's stable, it works.
Download the latest, then replace variables with your version you downloaded & local directory.
You should be able to run .exes with mono *.exe, ofcourse * represents the name for a executable.

Code:
tar xvf mono-4.2.1.tar****2
cd mono-4.2.1
./configure --prefix=/usr/local
make
make install
You can run executables, your vps is already running php, apache & mysql in a preconfigured package. Should be able to import the structure/prod sql table via your hosting panel, I'd assume.
If you run into a log4net con error deleting the log4net wServer configuration file on wServer should help you out cheer. If this is hard to follow, I can be contacted on dis at Arcanuo#7512.
I'll give that a proper go. I certainly appreciate your looking into it.
