Testing cheats?

Really don't know whether i'm posting this in the right section.

I know this sounds stupid, but if i download a cheat/hack/exploit how do i check test the files for virusses?
I do not mean running in through a virusscan but actually downloading the software and running it.
How do i know if it actually is working?

It depends which source it is from, if it's from an company, you won't find the malware anyway
If it's from an untrusted source, download the rar file, do not extract it yet, and upload it to virustotal, it will tell you what is found.

If it is an executable download it on a virtuall machine first, same thing as above, check with virustotal

If u want to know if it's actually working in-game u will need to run It, always test on a VM, if it's bad, it's only going to harm the virtuall harddrive, which means ur pc is safe

There are also some D3d executables out there which mimic a certain game, it's only black screen most likely, but it will show u if the menu is working at least

I know how a VM works, but if i want to test the software/hack do i need to download the game itself too?

Yeah, or like I said u find a working d3d exe for the game, but if u wanna know if it's working in-game the only way is to start it

Alrighty, thanks alot.

Decompile and check the source mainly, but as stated above, use a VM for testing it and such
