I am probably just being a spaz but why can't I make my avatar a .gif?

Because it's greater than the maximum dimensions and converted to a non-animated gif when resized.

Just become premiuim, it supports the website and allows you to have big gif

yes, also make sure it meets or is less than the file size limit as well.
