Breaking item stack

So, I read in this thread that it is possible to break the item stack, making the items in that stack 0, -1 or lower, thus letting player to complete quest without having required reagents.
My question is - would this trick work with any other in-game misc. item, for example Fortune Tickets?

But I wonder if doing this allows you to continuously turn in the item?
