1st of all.. you don't learn "programs", you do learn programming languages...
2nd every language is useful...

Idk, maybe because Java is the world's fastest growing programming language and one of the most powerful. Not to mention it will probably be what you're programming in when(if) you get a job in programming. It's basically the base language in Computer Science.
