Why?

Why do you know java? What's the point in learning it really? I have to learn it for school and I'm not too excited. Why should I learn java?

Well we've already done stuff in VB and C++ so I don't see why we're doing java now instead of getting more in-depth.

because nowadays industry is looking for mostly Java and .NET coders (Java mainly for multi-platforms and .NET mainly for web stuff)

I would say that there is an almost equal distribution of program making in C++ and Java.
