I like version 1 it looks nice.

I don't find it very interesting. I think to improve upon this more intricacy in the smudging and more colours (still matching) would help as well.

You could try filling the black in with some fractals,etc.

Fractals don't fit this style unless their smudged.
But if he did smudge them, it really wouldn't look good anyways.
