Well then obvious there had to be someone fairly convincing that you heard to make you become a theist. Unless you were won over with emotional appeals; I'd like to know what you discovered that made you adopt a theistic belief. It's very rare that I hear of atheists becoming theists so maybe you found something valid in theism that's worth sharing.
🙂 Quran + science :)
Well socially I would have to agree, the church group is a great place for support and many atheists like myself who can't be bothered to drive to Seattle for atheist get-togethers may lack that sense of community (thinking of starting my own atheist/skeptical group so people north of Seattle don't have to trek all the way down there). With regards to careers I may have to disagree, as you begin to climb into more intellectually demanding jobs you are far more likely to run into atheists; that and religious discrimination being so easy to sue over.
Well, I was raised a Roman Catholic..but I denounced that Religion a long time ago.
I continued to believe in God, but just didn't follow their ways,
Catholics blatantly take the Holy Bible out of context,
They exploit the word of God for their own greedy endeavors..
I got to some rough points in my life, where I refused to believe all together.
It wasn't until a few months ago I started getting my faith back.
My father was the main influence,
he too gave up Catholicism many years ago.
My father lives about 600 miles away from me,
So we often have long phone conversations about God.
I was telling him that I felt an emptiness, and I need God.
So we spent hours pretty much helping me get back into fellowship.
The reason my father inspired me the most,
is because he was diagnosed with Bi-polar years ago,
and he was a very miserable and often angry man.
He is also dealing with a great amount of physical hardship,
He was in a motorcycle accident a while back,
his legs are severely damaged, and he's at risk of losing one of them.
But despite all of this, the Bi-Polar, and his legs,
You would never know anything is wrong with him.
He says that God is his strength,
that he no longer needs medication for his Bi-polar,
and he doesn't even take pain medication for his legs.
The only time he has any pain meds, is when nurses would do IV trickles of morphine after his surgeries.
He's completely changed his outlook after joining his ministry.
He's much stronger than me, and I really want to get that strength..
To not let all these earthly problems weight on my shoulders so much.
It was also the Holy Bible itself that got me to be in fellowship with God again.
I think a lot about Solomon's words whenever I feel God slipping from me.
King Solomon, the writer of Ecclesiastes, had wealth beyond measure, wisdom beyond any man of his time or ours, hundreds of women, palaces and gardens that were the envy of kingdoms, the best food and wine, and every form of entertainment available. He said at one point that anything his heart wanted, he pursued. And yet he summed up “life under the sun”—life lived as though all there is to life is what we can see with our eyes and experience with our senses—is meaningless. Why is there such a void? Because God created us for something beyond what we can experience in the here-and-now. Solomon said of God, “He has also set eternity in the hearts of men...”
(Ecclesiastes 3:11). In our hearts we are aware that the “here-and-now” is not all that there is.

Okay so it was emotional appeals that made you adopt theism. That's a shame, I was hoping someone had some convincing evidence.
By the way I'm calling shenanigans on your dad being fine w/o his bipolar medication. Personally I would be really worried if my father was bipolar, was very religious and didn't take his meds...
Well yeah I can understand that, the US is like 80% religious so the chances are still really high.

I don't need convincing evidence,
since I'm not trying to prove anything.
You asked and I told.
Believe what you like about my father,
he was told he had to be hospitalized for a week to recover from surgery.
He just called me from home, no joke at all.
Trust me, even I'm surprised about his choice to stop meds,
but I'm not worried about him,he's happy without drugs for once.
A lot of people want "evidence" of God.
Something they can see, and touch.
God shows us only what he feels is necessary, and even this is cryptic.
If everyone on earth knew of God for sure,
Many would most likely be following out of fear of hell,
and not out of love.
Honestly, believers have nothing to lose.
If you apply God's teachings correctly, there is plenty to gain.
On Earth, and in heaven as well.

Lol unless you are specifically going to be a scientist, religion gives you lots of benifits.
"as you begin to climb into more intellectually demanding jobs you are far more likely to run into atheists"
Pfft, yeah, well the better paying ones aren't as likely to have atheist lulz.

The bad thing about being an atheist is having no holidays.

I wouldn't know about religion in the US, but here in Slovenia (central + kind eastern-ish Europe) religion rarely affects you in any way other than socially (unable to join certain religious communities, but that's about it). Regarding "better paying job": again, either the people running aren't publisizing their religious views or they aren't religous. In any case it doesn't matter as long as you don't start mixing religion with work, science and education (something that often happens in the US).
I have just as many holidays as everyone else

We have plenty of holidays, like April 1st. /
But seriously,
@Empire
Have you noticed a correlation between jobs that require a greater education and jobs that pay well?
And most of the time religion is avoided like the plague at work; for fear of religious discrimination.

I'm talking more about corporate stuff, not so much as talking about it, but being religious can help you more.
As for running into atheist more, yeah i could see that, but still you'd probably run into a lot more religious ppl.
