I recommend getting 4GB or higher, depending on what you're using - desktop or laptop.
Afterwards upgrade straight to Windows 7. Depending on your computer, the installation shouldn't take that long.

Upgrade your whole computer < My suggestion
If you got a laptop, no. If you got a desktop find out what type you got with Everest Ultimate and buy a model with similar specifications. Frequency, CAS latency, voltage etc. Whatever you do don't try to download RAM.

Something makes me think AGP or on-board graphics with a Pentium 4.
I don't think Windows 7 is that big of an improvement except for security and looks. Performance shouldn't be that different.
i mite just buy 1 gb of ram... if i do can i still keep my 800 mb ? and make it 1800 mb
