DDoS Attacks

I know this isnt exactly related to malware, but I urgently need help.

Is there any effective way how to prevent DDoS attack or stop it if it's already happening? I tried so many methods - turning on firewall, disabling local area connection thing and then restarting it, reading thru everything Microsoft help thing has in Windows XP regarding blocking ports etc., but never found a solution, the DDoS attacks stopped, but sadly I didn't stop them and I need how to do it..

I know there's almost nothing I can do againist them, but perhaps you can tell me for example a way how to block attacker's IP? I know that DDoS would be made from several computers, but I don't mind spending 30 minutes blocking every single IP that's connected to my PC just to get rid of DDoS attack that's bothering me for 3+ hours.

If you have the time set up a dedicated linux firewall / server / router. I always use iptables and I've never had any problems /

Well, I have Windows XP.. I tried setting up a router, but failed due to the setup constantly asking me to reset the router even thought I friggin' did it (lol)! I previously had a router set up, but sadly I didn't know the username & password (it was custom, not the default ones) that my grandfather set when he was setting up router for my mother.. so router was kind of pain in the back for me (had to constantly plug the internet cable directly into PC so I could play some games or host lobbies etc. in some games).

Resetting your router with a pen should reset your router to factory settings.
If there is still a user and pw it should be
user: admin
password: admin

or sometimes the user is admin and the password is password

I don't want to spend $150 just to avoid DDoS attacks. Is there really no way to block someone's connection to your network etc.? I am 100% sure it's possible as it's used to hack in Company of Heroes Online (drop hacking), please someone explain me how to get it done, got DDoSed 2nd time in 3 day period.
