DDOS is distributed denial of service, DOS is denial of service.
To DDOS u need to have many computers that are under your control. People back in the 2000s had a ton of windows computers since they were easy to hack. Now only a few people got the power to DDOS since you need to distribute programs instead of just scanning ip addresses for vulnerabilities.
