d3d is the only way to go.
Yep, you can't do it without D3D.
You can but it's ugly. D3D is your best approach.
I also suggest everyone takes a look at proxy dll with their GPP, it allows you to easily hook text into dx games. I also suggest EasyHook and SlimDx , do some research , it's not as hard as some would think.

Your gunna have to use a d3d wrapper for it to overlay... Google has tons of tuts on how to do it
