Pop star Justin Bieber has been rushed to hospital after suffering an allergic reaction on the set of crime drama CSI.

The singer started suffering breathing problems on Wednesday night shortly after filming for an upcoming episode in Burbank, California, The Sun newspaper reports.

Bieber's spokesperson said the teen was released and returned to set after about an hour.

"His doctor met him at the hospital to make sure everything was okay," the spokesperson said.

"He was released within the hour after his doctor declared him fine. He is back on set working today (Thursday). All is well."

Bieber was reprising his role as troubled teenager Jason McCann.

The episode will air in the US on February 17.
