[Questions]Starting C++
1: I got a book that was suggested to me for starting and using C++, the book is called "C++ Primer Plus, Fifth Edition"...I just figured out that its 1,187 pages long!!!! Is it really worth reading, meaning will I learn enough where it was worth the time I put into it?

I read about 1 page per every 3-5 minutes thats: 59.35 - 98.92 hours! (take me about...23.74 + days for me to read it all...)

2: Any other books that might be shorter and help me as much or maybe even more?

3: Anything I should know or do before starting C++? Anything else that will help me learn it? (links/books)

Thanks.
A book that long is probably detailed and would give an indepth explaination of how the language works. If you're really determined to learn it i would suggest reading the book... although most programmers will tell you that you can never learn a language just by reading one book. You wont be able to process all of the information you read the first time, and aside from that your time thing is all off. If you spend 3-5 minutes reading a page you wont have a chance of processing all of it On top of that there's excersizes in most books that you need to do to get a full understanding. I'll tell you right now even if it seems like its pointless for simple things, the more hands on stuff you do the easier it is to remember the language.

SO i recommend getting some sort of IDE before you start to learn obvs, and to make little programs as you go along to get the most out of the book . It's gunna take some time and commitment... learning any language is no walk in the park. Even with programming experience it's important to read over the book as much as you can.

Some online tutorials you can try are:

Learn C++ (highly recommended. I'm personally using this as well as an ebook to learn right now)

1: Yes it's worth reading all of it. Even if you have to force yourself, the thing is, make yourself WANT to learn C++, don't make it a chore or else you won't finish your end goal. Trust me on this one, at first I wanted to learn C++ just so I could make MMO hacks, that turned out to be a bust, but I kept with it because I thought it was pretty cool, then school started so I had to put that on hold for right now.

2: As far as book's go, they basically are all the same. They take different approaches at trying to teach you, but in the end, you learn the same thing from everyone.

Visual C++ Development Books Some recommended books by Microsoft (MSDN is also go as a resource site, has lots of valuable information, use that site as a guide if you want)

3: What you should do: WANT to learn C++. Make it fun for yourself.
What you need: A bunch of freetime and an open mind.

Good luck on your journey through C++
