True. Proxy servers don't work. I tried them in my university.

use the tor union network, or the i2p networks, they should work even while in school. They're used to bypass government firewalls (like china's)

It is, I've done it. This won't work on all filters, but, if you bypass the filter proxy and connect directly to the upstream proxy, you can bypass the filter. (Some institutions use multiple "proxy layers" to do their thing).
