It is very necessary. It agitated me, and was on the verge of sending me into an uncontrollable fit of anger that would haunt me forever.

Or its a grammatical error that for some reason bothered me even though I rarely use apostrophes. Maybe it was the fact that it was there when it didnt need to be, rather than not being there and needed to be.
