Help iphone question

ok my AT&T 2 year plan is almost up and im looking on getting iphone but i have to get data plan if i buy the iphone now and dont put my smart chip in for a month so i can save my money up. will i still be able to play on a online macht with apps if i have WIFI connection like a ipod touch. or do i need a data plan to even download a app form my computer to iphone. Any iphone user care to help me here.

I'm pretty sure you can only get an iPhone with data plan... .

You could, theoretically, buy one that doesn't have a data plan but will be much more expensive. just get an iPod touch if you want free Wifi.

Get a Droid.

Or a Droid and a PSP, then tape them together. You now have a PSP phone. Wahla.

like i buy iphone and dont put smartchip in and dont call get my plan setup with iphone can i use it like a iptouch and just use wifi and i whont be able to make calls untill i put in chip make a dataplan or do i have to do it this way....How to Use an iPhone Without the Data Plan

and Jailbreak and unlock i thought those are illegal well unlocking idk but jailbreak u can have that on ur iphone and whont get in trouple k cool.
