Ironically, your point is flawed because of religion.

You see, heaven and hell really are there to give comfort to people. Not in the way you probably think, the whole "hey when i die i go to heaven" way.

No, you see it a little bit more fucked up than that. Its for revenge. Its for the sake of depression in the same way, but in a different way as well.

The thought is that if you believe in something not only will you lead a better life, but it will give your life a meaning and purpose which is lost without religion.
