This guide is for locating your .minecraft folder, bin folder, texture pack folder, META-INF folder, and other things too. There is a few different methods, but I will show you the most direct one, and a simple one.
Direct Method
Go to your start menu, and select Run. (My taskbar is on the top of my screen but it looks the same if its on the bottom)
Type in %appdata% and hit enter.
There will be some folders here, depending on what you have installed, but the .minecraft folder should be the first one.
Easy/Simple Method
Open Minecraft and go to the "Mods and Texture Packs" menu.
Hit "Open texture pack folder".
this is where you will drag your .zip Texture Pack folders to access them from in game without doing a manual install/patcher. To get to your main folder, hit the Folder Up button to get there.
Other folders in your main .minecraft folder:
Saves
In this folder will be where you saves are located. To share your saves with other people, open this folder and copy your world to where ever you want, then pack it into a .zip/.rar and send it to who wants it. To receive saves, unpack the save you downloaded, and drag the folder in here. Make sure you are putting JUST the world file in here, and not any parent folders that it might have been saved in. An actual world save folder will have at least a 'Region' folder in it, and a 'level.dat' file in it. It may also have a DIM-1 folder, or level.dat_old files as well.
Screenshots
this folder will contain all the screenshots that you take with the in game screenshot. Push F2 to take screenshots in game.
bin
In this folder will be your minecraft.jar. Open this with either Winrar or 7Zip to install mods. Make sure to delete the META-INF folder inside the minecraft.jar before installing mods too.
I wrote this guide primarily as a reference for future threads. Especially for mod releases. Some people do not know how to get to their .minecraft folder for installing texture packs or mods, so I wrote this so that people can link to this thread instead of writing out the instructions each time. Simply link to this thread in the installation instructions of your mod (Which you should be including with every release people) to save some time and trouble.

hmmmm, good for nubs
Simpler way of saying it:
1. type in %appdata% in a explorer browser
2. locate the .minecraft folder
there is all your "base" stuff for minecraft
Vista & Win 7 Users: search "%appdata%" and click enter
for XP just use run and do the same
it really isnt that hard and didnt need such a massive tutorial.
But GREAT effort . Thanks.

Like I said, this is going to be used as a reference. And believe it or not, some people will need such a big explanation.
2 most basic methods
i use either, both get me to it, don't matter
i prefer appdata though, when i don't need to open Minecraft

When I hit run in the start menu, appdata is already there so I use that method the most too.
