Please... not Dark Basic... I'll do anything!!!;D!!!!
I would invest time in learning a multipurpose language (like C or C++) and an API like DX, SDL(with OpenGL for rendering graphics), allegro, etc. You can do a whole lot more than a language just made for games, and if you want to be a programmer as a profession, you actually have something you can show to a company, I don't think any company would even waste their time looking at some Dark basic programmer
c++

You could technically do the same with VB.NET as you could with C++, it's just done in different ways, more time consuming, and generally just more of a pain in the ass. C++/Assembly is the most powerful solution for low-level shit, like game hacks. C#/VB and other .NET languages are good for RAD, though low-level stuff can be done. Honestly, if you really want .NET, C# is better(in my opinion). Though it's really just personal preference, I enjoy the C syntax.
Edit: A good programmer is language-independant, really. Or at least knowledgeable in a LOT of areas/languages/platforms.
