Halo 3 help

Okay, im a noob at this
i just got xbox live and i set it all up
i downloaded halo 3 to my hard drive
i got the two free maps

when i go into match making, nothing happens...i wait forever

the connection thing is xbox live open party :\

Please help me :[

You need an xbox live gold membership to play online, do you have that?
