i am a bit worried about this...
does it mean the only way to access the game from outside US is now only by paid VPN?

That sounds like your proxy fails.

i tried like 10 proxies by now, i can't pass the "Failed to authenticate the sso server" msg, even once they blocked that account for suspicious activity

nvm finally i found a proxy that worked

Mhm, Nico is right, since I started playing Vindictus last year, I have always used the Direct Launcher, I used Proxycap (+ PuTTY for my paid Proxy)

I think Vindictus (or maybe its Mabinogi, I play both) detects the Proxycap as a hack so I have to use Resource Hacker to change the process name of Proxycap to someting else.

use proxycap dude.have been using it since march 2012.
