You can use Combined Operations this is true, but you can save something like 40% by buying Operation Arrow head and using Arma 2 free edition.
GOG.com sell Combined Operations with a great installer. They claim no DRM. After installing that DayZ is a couple of clicks away using the Dayz Commander installer.
The standalone version of Arma 2 Operation Arrowhead use SecureROM DRM and this may make re-installing a challenge though I cannot speak for Steam.
My most recent install I used the GOG Combined Operations installer because I had *alot* of problems trying to get standalone copies to work. After installing I edited the registry to use my Operation Arrowhead and also the free Arma 2 CD-Key . Surprisingly it all worked out.
I bought that key from
Arma 2 Operation Arrowhead CD Key || BuyGameCDKeys.com: Forget The Price, Enjoy The Game! || for just under $15. If you google that company + coupon code you can find 5% discount. You can also google their reputation. They seem to buy their games from all over Europe for cheap and then just email people the CD-Keys. There were around 4 other companies online selling "legit" keys for the same price.
I am lead to believe that in the steam sales Arma 2 pops up even cheaper almost every time. Though if you plan on waiting, you must consider the standalone version of Dayz (Eg NO installing of Arma 2 required) is "planned" to be released before the end of the year. Who knows what price that will be. Who knows how buggy that will be.
The last option is paying someone on this site for a CD-key. The going rate seems to be $2-$5. These keys are generally stolen and even if not will probably be sold to more than one person. The issue with that is, a single key can only be online once. Also, maybe the person who bought the same key an hour after you bought it will do something silly and get the key banned within seconds of using it.
