Recent shootings
In light of the news from Connecticut I wanted to share something written less than half a year ago-- sadly it was that recently that a score of defenseless people had to die for someone else's "right" to own semi-automatic weapons.
"The reality is simple: every country struggles with madmen and ideologues with guns, and every country—Canada, Norway, Britain—has had a gun massacre once, or twice. Then people act to stop them, and they do—as over the past few years has happened in Australia. Only in America are gun massacres of this kind routine, expectable, and certain to continue."
The reality is still simple. One by one these events are national tragedies, but our preference to treat them as human interest stories rather than as the urgent consequences of a critical policy failure is more of a national farce. No one can say what makes a person take a weapon to a movie theater or a school with the intention of hurting as many people as possible. But anyone who isn't intentionally shielding themselves from the facts can tell you which policies make those intentions actionable.
I, for one, have realized that it is time for change and would even go so far as to deem abolishing the Second Amendment as necessary.
