When altering hfs files, what do I do with UpToDate.dat? (error 36)
Using Pie's recent hfs mods, I had fun, so I decided I'd try my hand at HFS. I took his HFS files, unzipped, did my changes, rezipped, used vzipflip to turn it into .hfs, deleted the underscore, used hfssign on both of the .hfs files I changed, got "success" for both of them, then moved the files (including UpToDate.dat) to the game's hfs folder. After that, I start the game, and get error 36'd.

All of the files I were altering were in my vzf folder (including UpToDate.dat) and I tried both cmd and the executables themselves. I searched these forums but I can't seem to find any info about this problem.
Assuming that you worked on Pie's hfs files, and that you modified multiple hfs files, say N, here is the logic regarding signing newly created hfs files:

let n = 1, n <= N
1. Copy Pie's UpToDateInfo.dat to the folder you're working with
2. Sign the nth hfs file
3. n++, just keep track of which hfs file you are signing
4. You should get a UpToDateInfo.dat.new in your folder
5. Delete UpToDateInfo.dat
6. Rename UpToDateInfo.dat.new to UpToDateInfo.dat
7. Repeat step 2-6 until you've signed all your hfs files
8. Move UpToDateInfo.dat to your vindictus folder

5 and 6 were the parts that were tripping me up. I ended up not renaming the new dat, which meant I was only getting one hsf included. I replaced the new HFS and dat files and I got the game to load. I have yet to see if my additions have worked yet since I'm busy at the moment, but thanks for the help.
dont zip up the long hfs file folder, zip the contents from within the unzipped folder. thats your error.

That's what I did, I guess I just wasn't clear in my explanation.
  • Open Command Prompt in Admin Mode
  • In the cmd prompt, Browse over to the folder with vzipflip, while there type vzipflip a (This will extract all hfs files and convert them to zip files)
  • Unzip the zip files
  • Make your edits, Save edits
  • From within the unzipped file, select any .comp file and press and hold control and press a, this will select all the files. Right click any .comp file and zip them up (Just use the default naming of the zip you can rename it later)
  • Move the newly zip files with all the edits you made to the vzipflip folder, Rename it to the original hfs file name, from there in cmd promt type vzipflip h 3918237298379218371928372918321.zip <---- Example zip file name.
  • This will create a new hfs file located in your C harddrive directory.
  • Cut and paste the hfs file to the hfssign folder, remove the trailing underscore.
  • Browse to your Vindictus folder, copy UpToDateInfo.dat (Not UpToDateInfo2.dat) and paste it into the hfssign folder where you copied your newly created hfs file that you copied from C drive.
  • In cmd prompt Browse over to the hfssign folder, then type hfssign UpToDateInfo.dat 3918237298379218371928372918321.hfs and you should get a Success message from the hfssign cmd prompt window and a new file called UpToDateInfo.dat.new
  • Copy the hfs file to the Vindictus HFS folder, and Copy the UpToDateInfo.dat.new to the Vindictus root folder.
  • Rename your original UpToDateInfo.dat to something else and rename UpToDateInfo.dat.new to UpToDateInfo.dat
when i try my hfs sign i dont get the uptodateinfo.dat.new showing up just a question asking if i want to make my hfs file larger by adding comments to it.

I replied to your other post, you must add dummy files to it to make it larger, like a txt file or a jpeg
Get a fresh .dat file and consecutively sign each .hfs file you modified. If you use Pie's .dat file, and you don't use his .hfs files, then it won't work, even if you over-sign them. @MCMXCIX
There's a lot of ways to mess this up, but that was my first thought as to what you may have done wrong.
Sorry, I thought it was clear by my first reply that I had found the problem. I just don't know how to change the thread to "Solved." Thanks for the help though, @maddoggy00 and @mrperez816.
