What do you mean replace? Like replace the one currently installed with a whole new one, or upgrade the one you have now, or completely fresh install a mod?

Replacing a mod or updating a mod is for myself the easiest with forcing updating minecraft and install the mod like you used to do it.

You force update and download a new one and reinstall that mod.

Well, if you download a clean minecraft.jar (force update) then you want to download the mod itself. The mod may have instructions, may not, but I'll give you the general scheme of what you need to do.

You need to go into your .minecraft/bin/ folder and find your minecraft.jar file. Right click and press, "Open with WinRAR". (You need to have WinRAR downloaded if you don't already). Now, you need to delete your META-INF folder (which is inside the jar) and then place the mod files in. Most likely the files are classes and when you place them in it'll ask you to "Move and replace?" -- just say yes.
