Let me clear this up to the best of my ability.
Riot checks referrals in waves. So you may have botted 5 refs and stopped and your account is doing fine for like 6 months then all of a sudden bam they caught you. You will never find out when they check but they do. It does not matter if you bot 5 or 5,000 they will check and they will take action. The best security methods I know of is make it look as realistic as possible. Riot will not do anything if it looks at all real, they cannot afford to take action if there is the slightest chance those refs are real (nevertheless some do, and it is just a matter of an email claiming you are innocent for them to back off). In order to do this you have to make it look real, I go by 3 rules which you will also find in lolrefbotplus+
1. IP - The biggest clue to riot. If the ip for all your accounts are the same Riot is 100% sure you are botting those refs. You WILL get caught. Don't just use any proxy because there are ways to detect proxies. You will need to mask your ip or use a high anonymity proxy, check out hidemyass for some good ones.
2. Level - One major issue I have seen with people botting is the fact that they bot refs to level 10 and move on. wtf.... if you are a riot employee and checked an account tell me this does not sound suspicious: 20 refs all level 10. The minimum level to get milestone rewards... hmmm.... Mix it up.. Get one to 13 get one 11 hell just get one to 3 or 7. It is better to not get milestone rewards for 1 account then getting caught.
3. Name - This one isn't a huge indicator alone, but mixed in with a bunch of level 10s it would be a 100% chance to get caught. Make the names unique. Using crap like asdf1234, asdf12345 look stupid and is the same as iambotting123.
If you follow the above 3 rules, no matter how many refs you have you are most likely going to be safe, but remember nothing is 100% safe. All i can say is if they do catch you and you followed the above 3 rules, talk with them. Fight your case and claim you were not botting, there is a chance they could have just been like "eh we think he is botting." I have had that happen to me in Maplestory. I was actually hacking and they banned my account (probably for suspicion since I was leveling 24/6, yet they were not 100% sure), after emailing them claiming I was not hacking they gave me my account back with 25k nx (unfortunately it took 7 fucking months for their support team to respond and I quit maplestory by then). These companies are not going to stick with these actions unless they are 100% sure. If they are sure they will tell you and you move on, don't keep fighting them if they have proof -_-. Anyways back on topic

What happens if they do catch you?
I have yet to hear of someone's account being banned for botting refs. The only thing they will do is ban you from refer-a-friend and take away all your rewards.
