You can clock your cpu, change the operating system to linux if you feel extreme. You can also change to many different roms and change fonts, bootscreens, change the kernel for optimum performance, delete unwanted system apps, block ads. I would totally go for it just don't be stressed and stay calm and double read the instructions.

It's basically a different version of the android operating system. They usually come with a different look. There is thousands of different rom's some are built for speed while some are built for maximum battery time. Cyanogenmod is one of the biggest ones. It comes with a different look, optimizations and is usually very un bloated (meaning no manufacturer apps or unwanted apps).
