From previous betas (bc2/bf3), they last for about two weeks to a month. Since alpha is out, I don't see closed beta lasting for more than a month and open beta about two weeks before release.

Battlefield had official start on 25 october, and beta on end of september. I think bf4 beta will be similar to it.

I think they will have the beta for/shortly after gamescom 2013 (22nd August - 25th August) available.
Usually November or October.
I think November is when they do the Alpha/Beta testing.
