Upgrade Time
Before making any suggestions please look at my current build below...
AMD FX-6100 3.3 GHz, ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0, Kingston HyperX 8GB @ 1600 Mhz, Sapphire Radeon HD 7770 1GB Ghz edition, Fractal Design Arc Midi R2, Corsair CX 500m 80 Plus Bronze

The fields I'm looking to upgrade in are the GPU, Mobo, and MAYBE the Case(?)(Thinking about a smaller case with good cable management capability)

Something I'm not certain about is whether or not to upgrade the processor... as far as gaming (all I do on this pc) should I just stick with that one or maybe get an 8 core (i'm staying with AMD CPU's)... it's a tough decision

Ultimately, I'd like to spend less than $400 on an upgrade that will last me at least until next winter and maybe to the summer of 2015.

PS. any advice on cable routing in this case? i'm not talented at it...
You shouldn't ever really upgrade your mobo unless it breaks, or doesn't have the right connections. Right now, I'd definitely stick with it.
Your case is fine as well.
Upgrade your CPU and GPU.
Maybe an FX-8120 and a Radeon 7870.
Total will run you about $300 and give you a huge performance bump.
Selling your old parts on eBay always help regain some of the price.
You'll most likely end up spending only about 200 or so bucks.
@Aborted thanks for the info and recommendations. i never even thought about selling the parts either, i'll definitely do that. would it maybe be better to get an FX6300 and save the extra money?

That's also an option.
If you have the choice, get the sapphire hd radeon 7790 for a couple more bucks, I have it and the fx 6100 and doing about 50-60 frames on high on most games.

that is an interesting comment... i haven't heard too many great things about the 7790

I'd recommend not getting a 7790. It's only got a 2-3% performance advantage over your current setup.

I'm just saying if you would have the extra money.
@Aborted should i get a 7870XT, GHz Edition, or just a regular 7870

If money allows, the GHz edition. Its clock rate is set higher, in excess of 1GHz, hence the name.
Though you'll still be perfectly fine with the standard edition.
