I used an online extractor because I do not have SoThink available atm. That might explain it.

Uploaded whatever had something even barely resembling a tile/wall. Not completely sure if transparency is still there, I guess yes.
If I were you I would work on the project anonymously and have as little ties to your real name as possible. If you remember jOryx, furyhunter who made it had to stop working it on it because copyright. The difference is he asked wildshadow if he could work on it and they said no. Knowing they wouldn't approve and kabam would probably send a cease/desist letter, keep it anon.

I heard it was the other way around. Wildshadow asked fury if he would stop.

OT, a custom client is akin to a private server. If the client becomes big, you'll probably get some unwanted attention from kabam.
Realm of the Mad God was made as a part of a game making competition where you had to make a game using the provided art.
From Wikipedia "The game was originally created by Alex Carobus and Rob Shillingsburg, founders of Wild Shadow Studios, for TIGSource's "Assemblee Competition" in October 2009, which limited the competitors to a very small sample of art resources."

The idea of "Realm of the Mad God" is probably copyrighted, which is where you might run into difficulty, but the original art was not Wild Shadow's or Kabam's.
With that being said they do have claim to all artwork they have made themselves, including artwork made using the pixel editor.

Your best bet would be to not give any information that, if you become popular they could track you down with, or you can change the game enough that it would not be covered under copyright and therefore be yours.

Good luck though!

Fun fact Realm of the Mad God placed 3rd in the competition it was made for, but I have never heard of the games that one first and second
Hmm, quite funny if they would care about a custom client, but not all the hacked clients out there.

Yeah, I guess its against their TOS. But all they can do is demand me to stop, right?

Why do you care? Everything we are doing in this forum is against their TOS.. Do what ever you want as long as you don't ask for money, just credit Kabam, write some blabla The assets present in this project is the property of Kabam inc. blablablabla
Okay, I think I am going to continue on this project. What do you guys think on releasing the source and maybe make the client run scripts like RR? It could increase the amount of bots, so I am kind of unsure if I should make it open source.

Open source it? Not sure if it matters. You plan on programming the client with java which means that if you decide to stem the tide of bots by not releasing the source, your efforts will be in vain. Since java is an interpreted language, anyone can get a high level view of the code even without the source files.

Aside from all that, what you are proposing here is a lot of work and not something that will be done in a few weeks time and by that I mean a viable alternative to kabam's client. You still have a lot of time to consider these questions as you work.

True. I hope to get some support by making this open source. It is a big project, but I have the motivation and knowledge to make a fully customizable client.

If you ever want to know if something is copyrighted.....just think about your favorite song and then think about Weird Al Yankovich redoing that song.......ignore the fact that weird al asks the original song writer for permission to make fun of their songs and the fact that if you change enough words in the songs, it no longer is the other persons song and then becomes Weird Al's song......

BUT, if the original artist has copyrighted the beat to the song then Weird Al is not allowed to redo that song with the same beat.......

...........................Back on topic..........................

You could remake the client and edit the mobs to the way they look. But Wildshadow has every right to say......you cannot make a game that looks pretty much exactly like our game. It would be exactly like what Weird Al does.....changes the words but the beat is still the same. Your client would maybe look different but it would still interact the exact same way as RoTMG
