I never suggest for people to SLI anything less than flagship cards due to the numerous issues they have. Microstuttering is always an issue, though both AMD and Nvidia have recently reduced its effect. Not all games even support SLI either, so you'd be screwed over with nothing but a low-tier card to drive your graphics. The extra power can also be a huge issue, and a lot of motherboards downclock the second card by running in x4 rather than x16. Due to this both cards suffer as well. The only time I really suggest to SLI or Crossfire is when you're trying to exceed the power put out by the highest cards, such as Titans or 780's. In most cases though, you'll be a lot better off opting for a single card.
