Jesus, look for the meaning behind the metaphors.
The entire episode Daryl detailed about his childhood and how he grew up. His upbringing was the cage he was trapped in, not a single time was he ever was allowed to show his emotions. For all his life he had to keep it bottled up, he had to turn his skin for leather for the sake of survival. The ending was the final overcoming of his past, and he burned it all to the ground with a smile.
