probably not version.ini related, great chance it could be some kind of virus/keylogger working by injecting dlls to all processes, including crossfire..
try installing a good antivirus software, and start a scan for all loaded modules.
anyway if you are going to proceed on your own, you will have to mark your version.ini as read-only since crossfire overwrites this file each time you start the game.
find a file named "localinfo.dat" inside your crossfire folder, open it with a text editor, you will find a url there copy it and paste in a web browser to get an updated version.ini
alternatively, if your crossfire is cfna, you can copy this up-to-date one:
Code:
[VERSION]
LatestVersion = 1167
MinimalVersion= 1120
OwnVersion = 6

[DOWNLOAD]
server1 = http://cfpatch.z8games.com/download/

[SERVER]
COUNT = 1
IP1 =67.210.208.133
PORT1 =13008

[HGW]
PORT=16666
SERVER1=67.210.208.161
SERVER2=67.210.208.163
POD1=50
POD2=50
If you have a version.ini problem delete your host file and maybe even hosts.ics

To find the hosts file, go to my computer, windows, system 32, drivers, hosts, and delete the hosts.ics and other host file in the hosts folder

This sounds like a possibility. maybe the virus edits the hosts file and messes with the xtrap update channel. Try going to

C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
and open the hosts file. if u see anything other than

127.0.0.1 localhost loopback
::1 localhost

remove them. and then install a fresh copy of CF and try. If it works. Post back here xD
I have the exact same problem from using the exact same hack. I reinstalled many times, deleted old folders, and deleted every hack off my computer. I'm going to do a complete virus scan now, but the hack I used was from the website "elite pvpers . com" with "/forum/crossfire-hacks-bots-cheats-exploits/3047813-oneshot-dev-com-na-eu-ph-jp-fg-sea-tw-al-ru-indo-kr-daily-update.html"
