It is a purely calculated decision. I'm doing it for the college, and strictly that. 6 year contract with the guaranteed job of 3D0X4 (Computer Systems Programmer). After that I'm out.
There is no "serving your country" bullshit.
I'll get $4,500/year for tuition while on active duty, plus the post 9/11 GI bill will pay for an additional 4 years at any state university while also providing the BAH of an E-5 with dependents (AKA, right now that would be about $1,200 to $1,800 in my pocket a month for 36 months, depending on the university's local cost of living.) I should finish a bachelors while on active duty, since most of my job training actually counts as college credit (+the 20 credit hours I already have). I'll only have to take a semester or two to finish an Associates.
Good luck.
Oh man have fun! My cousin just got done with that recently and he said he had fun. Hope you have fun also!

I know what you mean about the serving your country bullshit, if anything they're using you and spitting you out.
The programmer part sounds interesting, but government jobs don't pay shit. If you're doing it JUST for money, I'd recommend not to. You'd be surprised how easily you can get money, hell I found out the hard way, and I made quite a bit this summer over 3 months.
Good luckery.
Damn, killing two birds with one stone. Nice! Good luck man
army navy or airforce?

Fuck the military, your basically a can of coke to them, they don't give a fuck about you.
